The Society for Nautical Research


About us

The SNR is a society devoted to learning and plays an important part in the academic and curatorial world. It has some 1,600 members in more than 30 countries around the world. It has Overseas Corresponding Members in the United States, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland and Australia.

It is governed by an elected council served by specialist committees responsible for areas such as publications, research, small craft and marketing. Members of the governing bodies are drawn from many backgrounds. Their work and knowledge covers the full range of the fighting and merchant fleets, and the dockyards, harbours and ancillary activities that support them.

The Society is a registered charity (Registered number 1026357). It is also a company limited by guarantee (Company Registration Number 2848095) and registered in England.
