13 October 2011. In keeping with E G R Taylor's interests in the history of geography, instrumentation and travel, this illustrated lecture will examine printed guides to travellers as they helped promote geography as an emergent science in the nineteenth century, highlighting amongst others the work in the RGS of Julian Jackson and William Hamilton. Drawing upon work in book history, geography and the history of science, the lecture will illuminate the key but under-explored role of instruments and instrumental training in understanding geography's many narratives of exploration
