Paintings
The Society buys paintings and other items of historical and maritime interest for the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
Through its trusteeship of the MacPherson Collection Endowment Fund, it spends about £10,000 a year maintaining the MacPherson Collection and buying new items for the National Maritime Museum.
The scene of the action in 1806 between HMS Hydra and the French brig Furet, by an unknown artist, was part of the original collection of Arthur George MacPherson bought for the National Maritime Museum in 1928.
Other acquisitions for the National Maritime Museum include a portrait of Admiral Sir Peter Warren by Thomas Hudson.
In 2005, the Society bought a painting of Eddystone Lighthouse by Isaac Sailmaker and a portrait of Commodore George Walker by an artist of the British School.
