Trafalgar woods
To mark the two-hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005, the Society worked with the Woodland Trust to create 27 new woods, one for each of the ships of the line in Nelson’s fleet. The woods have names such as Victory, Bellerophon, Revenge and Agamemnon. Six more woods were planted to represent the support vessels involved in the battle.
The Trafalgar woods project involved thousands of schoolchildren all over the UK who helped in the planting. Altogether about a quarter of a million trees were planted in places as far apart as Cornwall, Perth and Kinross, Carmarthenshire and County Down.
Victory Wood is near Whitstable in Kent, marking the fact that HMS Victory was built in Kent, at Chatham Dockyard .
